Staying in Camps Bay

Camps Bay is a kilometre of white sand and granite boulders with the Twelve Apostles ridge standing straight up behind it and a strip of restaurants across Victoria Road that has been the city's sunset ritual since the 1990s. The sand runs about a kilometre from the volleyball nets at the northern end to the boulders at Bakoven, with a lawn strip along Victoria Road holding showers and free parking that fills by nine in January. Lifeguards are on duty in season and the rip currents at the northern corner are real, so swim between the flags.

These 4-star hotels sit along the slopes above that beach and in Bakoven just to the south: addresses on Theresa Avenue, Rontree Avenue, Hove Rd, Geneva Drive, First Crescent, Camps Bay Drive, Woodford Avenue, Chilworth Road and Victoria Road. It suits honeymooners and sun people whose holiday is built around a beach day and a sundowner, couples who want the sea in view, and families who will drive the five minutes to the sheltered tidal pools at Maiden's Cove. Anyone wanting to feel embedded in a city should look elsewhere.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

The bus does run, but coming home from a City Bowl dinner without wheels is a R200 Uber every time, so a car makes the difference here. The lawn strip along Victoria Road has free parking that fills by nine in January, and several of these hotels answer that with free car parking on site. Maiden's Cove, five minutes north toward Clifton, has its own free parking behind the tidal pools, and it is the best place in the area with small children. The Pipe Track trailhead is at the top of Kloof Nek Road where it meets Tafelberg Road.

When to go

Go early or after 5pm. The south-easter funnels down the ravines from November to February and can blow the beach out entirely by 2pm, while the sun drops behind the sea around 8.15pm in January. The water runs 13 to 16 degrees in summer. June and July are the months this stretch suits least, and a windbreak is worth carrying whenever you come. Shade is minimal on the Pipe Track, so walk it before 9am.
