5-star hotels in Camps Bay
A shortlist of 5-star hotels in Camps Bay, from the Twelve Apostles ridge to Victoria Road and the streets behind the beach. It is for honeymooners, sun people and anyone building a Cape Town trip around a beach day and a sundowner.
Staying in Camps Bay
Camps Bay is a kilometre of white sand and granite boulders with the Twelve Apostles ridge rising straight up behind it and a strip of restaurants across Victoria Road that has been the city's sunset ritual since the 1990s. The beach is blue-flag and enormous, and the water runs 13 to 16 degrees. The south-easter funnels down the ravines from November to February and can blow the beach out by 2pm, which is why locals go early or after 5pm; the four tidal pools at Maiden's Cove, minutes north toward Clifton, are the answer with children.
These hotels sit on the slopes and streets just above and behind the beachfront — Francolin Rd, Link Street, Argyle Road, Victoria Road, The Promenade, Central Drive, Houghton Drive and Road, Brook Street, St. Fillians Road, Blinkwater Road, Hely Hutchinson Ave, Kloofnek Road and Fulham Rd in Bakoven — so most are a short walk from the sand and the restaurant strip. It suits honeymooners and sun people whose holiday is built around a beach day and a sundowner; travellers without a car, anyone travelling in June and July, and anyone on a budget should look elsewhere.

Where to stay in Camps Bay
Victoria Road
The beachfront strip: Cafe Caprice, Bilboa, Paranga and Zenzero are shoulder to shoulder opposite the sand, the lawn strip along Victoria Road has showers and free parking that fills by nine in January, and the sand runs about a kilometre from the volleyball nets at the northern end to the boulders at Bakoven. Expect a queue for a table from 5.30pm December to February.
Our picks here: The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa · Azamare Guest House
Bakoven
Bakoven is the northern end of the bay, where the sand finishes among the boulders. It sits just north on Victoria Road between Camps Bay and Clifton, near the four sheltered tidal pools at Maiden's Cove with lawns, braai stands, toilets and free parking — warmer and calmer than the open beach, and the best place in the area with small children.

Plan your stay
Getting there and around
The bus does run, but coming home from a City Bowl dinner without wheels is a R200 Uber every time, so a car makes the stay far easier. Free parking is available at several hotels here, including Atlanticview Cape Town Boutique Hotel, South Beach Camps Bay Boutique Hotel, Pod Camps Bay, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, The Marly and Living Hotel Lions Eye. For walking, the Pipe Track trailhead is at the top of Kloof Nek Road where it meets Tafelberg Road, contouring for about 6 km beneath the Twelve Apostles with Camps Bay laid out below.
When to go
Go in the summer months for the beach, but plan around the wind: the south-easter funnels down the ravines from November to February and can blow the beach out entirely by 2pm, which is why locals go early or after 5pm. The sun drops behind the sea around 8.15pm in January. June and July are the months to skip. In season, lifeguards are on duty, and the rip currents at the northern corner are real, so swim between the flags.
