5-star hotels in Constantia

A shortlist of 5-star hotels in Constantia, the green wine valley below Constantia Nek. It is for wine people, families with a hire car, golfers and couples who want trees and quiet rather than nightlife or a sea view.

Staying in Constantia

Constantia is where South African wine began, in 1685, on the eastern slopes below Constantia Nek and the back of Table Mountain. It is a wealthy, deeply green residential valley of high walls, horse paddocks and oak avenues, with eight working wine estates inside its boundaries and Constantia Village shopping centre at the middle of it. By 9pm nothing is happening: no bars, no strip, unlit roads in places, estate restaurants taking last orders between 8.30pm and 9pm. That silence is the product on sale.

The hotels on this shortlist sit along the valley's green lanes and side roads. The Cellars Hohenort is on Brommersvlei Road, The Last Word Constantia and Constantia Uitsig on Spaanschemat River Road, The Alphen Boutique Hotel & Spa on Alphen Drive by the Alphen Trail, Glen Avon Lodge on Strawberry Lane, 14 on Klein Constantia on Klein Constantia Road below the estate, and Nova Constantia, Villa Coloniale Schumacher, Purple Rayn, Villa Lion View, Russet Rise, Camelot Villa, Two Luxury Villas and Luxury Serviced Villa on smaller Constantia roads. It suits couples, families with a car and golfers; Kirstenbosch, Tokai Forest, Muizenberg beach and the Southern Suburbs sit within twenty minutes, which makes it a strong touring base.

Where to stay in Constantia

Spaanschemat River Road

A green lane that carries two of the valley's estates and two of these hotels: The Last Word Constantia and Constantia Uitsig. It runs through the residential valley rather than any commercial strip, so expect gardens, walls and birdlife rather than street life; this is the quietest kind of Constantia address, and a car is needed for the winelands, the M41 and the M42.

Our picks here: The Last Word Constantia · Constantia Uitsig

Brommersvlei Road

The Cellars Hohenort's address, a residential Constantia road of mature gardens and estate walls on the valley side. Nothing is walkable except the lanes themselves; you drive to the wine estates and to Constantia Village, roughly ten minutes from estate to estate on the M41 and M42. Good for guests who want a garden, a fireplace and a fitness centre on site.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

There is no rail service in the valley itself; the Metrorail Southern Line runs down the far side of the M3 through Claremont, Wynberg and Plumstead, from where you need a car for the last four kilometres. Constantia sits about twenty minutes from the City Bowl and fifteen from Kalk Bay by road, with the M3 the main artery and the M41 and M42 linking the wine estates, all within ten minutes of each other. If you want an evening out you drive to the City Bowl or Kalk Bay and you will need a designated driver or an Uber, because traffic policing on the M3 is genuinely active.

When to go

Constantia is a wine valley first, so go when the tasting rooms and estate restaurants are in full summer swing and the oaks are green; January is the peak month, and the site notes the roads are unlit in places and the valley goes quiet by ten. Summer also suits the outdoor side of the shortlist, the Alphen Trail, the Klein Constantia vineyard walks and the salt water pools. Autumn is a reasonable second choice if you want the valley without peak crowds. Winter rain makes the touring base argument weaker.

Questions, answered

Which of these Constantia hotels is closest to the wine estates?

Constantia Uitsig and The Last Word Constantia are both on Spaanschemat River Road, and 14 on Klein Constantia is on Klein Constantia Road below that estate. The Alphen Boutique Hotel & Spa is on Alphen Drive beside the Alphen Trail. The valley's eight working wine estates sit within ten minutes of each other on the M41 and M42.

Do the hotels have parking?

The Cellars Hohenort, The Last Word Constantia, The Alphen Boutique Hotel & Spa, Glen Avon Lodge, 14 on Klein Constantia, Nova Constantia, Villa Coloniale Schumacher, Purple Rayn, Villa Lion View, Russet Rise, Camelot Villa and Two Luxury Villas all list free car parking. Constantia Uitsig lists a garage. Parking matters here, because there is no rail service in the valley.

Which Constantia hotels allow pets?

Two Luxury Villas 10 Bed Lyonesse & Lyons Den is the one property on this shortlist with pets allowed in its facilities. Constantia Uitsig states pets are not allowed. For the other hotels the data does not say, so ask the property directly before booking with an animal.

Which hotels have a pool or spa?

The Alphen Boutique Hotel & Spa lists both a spa and an outdoor pool, and Purple Rayn Boutique Guest House lists a spa, Jacuzzi and outdoor pool. Outdoor pools also appear at 14 on Klein Constantia, Villa Coloniale Schumacher, Luxury Serviced Villa in Constantia, Villa Lion View, Russet Rise and Two Luxury Villas; Camelot Villa adds an indoor pool, and massage is listed at several properties.

Which is best for families in Constantia?

The Cellars Hohenort, Glen Avon Lodge, Nova Constantia, Camelot Villa, Luxury Serviced Villa in Constantia and Two Luxury Villas all list family rooms, and most add cots and babysitting service. The Luxury Serviced Villa also has a kitchen, dishwasher and high chairs. Children are not accepted at Villa Coloniale Schumacher or Russet Rise, which are adults only.

What is the top-rated hotel on this shortlist?

The Last Word Constantia scores 4.8 out of 5 from 108 reviews, the highest rating here. The Cellars Hohenort follows at 4.7 from 1,242 reviews, then The Alphen Boutique Hotel & Spa at 4.6 from 944, Glen Avon Lodge and 14 on Klein Constantia at 4.6, and Villa Lion View, Nova Constantia, Camelot Villa and the adults-only properties, which carry no guest rating in the data.

Can you walk to restaurants and bars from these hotels?

No. Constantia has no bars, no strip and no street life, and the roads are unlit in places. Estate restaurants take last orders between 8.30pm and 9pm. That is exactly why people book here, and in January rates for good doubles are high for the region.

Which Constantia hotels are adults only?

Villa Coloniale Schumacher Luxury Retreat Adults Only and Russet Rise Adults Only. Both list outdoor pools, and Villa Coloniale Schumacher also lists a salt water pool, sauna and massage, while Russet Rise lists a pool bar, salt water pool and terrace. Neither appears to list family rooms, so they suit couples rather than families.
