Staying in Constantia

Constantia is where the South African wine industry started in 1685, on the eastern slopes below Constantia Nek and the back side of Table Mountain. It is a wealthy, deeply green residential valley of high walls, horse paddocks and oak avenues, with eight working wine estates inside its boundaries and Constantia Village at the middle of it. At 9pm nothing is happening: there are no bars, no strip and no street life, and estate restaurants take last orders between 8.30pm and 9pm. That silence is the product on sale. It suits wine people, families with a hire car and golfers, and makes a strong touring base, with Kirstenbosch, Tokai Forest, Muizenberg beach and the whole Southern Suburbs within twenty minutes. It suits backpackers, non-drivers and nightlife seekers badly.

Where to stay in Constantia

Bishopscourt

Klein Bosheuwel Guest House sits on Klaasens Road in Bishopscourt, on the Table Mountain side of the valley, with a swimming pool and wifi. A leafy, high-walled residential pocket, it keeps you close to Constantia Nek and the estates along the M41 while staying well clear of any street life.

Our picks here: Klein Bosheuwel Guest House

Tokai

Tiana Guest House is on Gerrie Avenue in Dennedal, Tokai, ten minutes south of Constantia. Tokai is the SANParks pine plantation and fynbos section, with graded mountain-bike trails and the Elephants Eye cave hike about ninety minutes up, plus Tokai Manor and picnic areas at the entrance.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

There is no rail service in the valley itself; the Metrorail Southern Line runs down the far side of the M3 through Claremont, Wynberg and Plumstead, from where you need a car for the last four kilometres. Drive the M3 or the M41 and M42 that link the wine estates, and note that traffic policing on the M3 is genuinely active. Estate restaurants close early and the roads are unlit in places, so an evening in the City Bowl or Kalk Bay means a designated driver or an Uber.

When to go

Summer days run long and dry, and estate terraces such as the one at Constantia Nek stay open until around 8pm, which suits late tastings but brings the busiest tasting rooms by noon. Spring and autumn give cooler, quieter estate visits with the oaks still in leaf, and winter is the valley's greenest, wettest season, better for cellar tours and long lunches at Jonkershuis than for the Elephants Eye climb or the Alphen Trail.
