Getting there and around
There is no rail service in the valley itself; the Metrorail Southern Line runs down the far side of the M3 through Claremont, Wynberg and Plumstead, from where you need a car for the last four kilometres. You will need a designated driver or an Uber for evenings out, because the traffic policing on the M3 is genuinely active, and the roads are unlit in places. Estate restaurants take last orders between 8.30pm and 9pm, so plan the drive back early. Parking is free at Groot Constantia.
When to go
Go for the summer months, when estate terraces stay open later and tastings run into the evening light. Constantia Glen, on Constantia Nek Road just below the pass, keeps its terrace open until around 8pm in summer. Groot Constantia is open daily from about 9am and gets very busy by noon, so arrive early in high season. Klein Constantia needs booking ahead in season. In the cooler months the Alphen Trail and the Tokai trails still draw joggers from 6am.
