Staying in City Bowl

The City Bowl is Cape Town's amphitheatre: the CBD grid, Bo-Kaap on the Signal Hill slope, and the residential shoulders of Gardens, Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht and Vredehoek, all wedged between the mountain, Devil's Peak, Signal Hill and the harbour. It is the one part of the city where you can genuinely live without a car for a week, with the cableway, the museums, three markets and about two hundred restaurants inside a thirty-minute walk of each other. It is also a working city centre: keep your phone away on Long Street after midnight, do not walk the Foreshore or the top end of Buitenkant alone at night, and expect car-guard interactions. The topography is the second thing to weigh, because Vredehoek and upper Oranjezicht look ten minutes from town on a map and are a punishing uphill in summer heat. Skip the City Bowl if you want to swim daily, or if a car horn at 2am ends your holiday.

These hotels sit across the bowl. Rouge on Rose Boutique Hotel is on Rose Street in Bo-Kaap, Cape Heritage Hotel on Bree Street and Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town North Wharf on Lower Bree Street in the CBD grid, The Onyx Apartment Hotel by NEWMARK on Heerengracht Street, Southern Sun Cape Sun on Strand Street and Charlotte on Roeland St. Maudville is on Warren Street, Mannabay Fine Boutique Hotel on Bridle Road and Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel and Spa on Kloofnek Road, while The Parkhouse on Kohling Street and More Quarters Hotel on Nicol Street sit in Gardens. Amina Boutique Hotel is on Whitford Street, The Cape Milner on Milner Road, Kensington Place on Kensington Crescent, Southern Sun Cullinan on Cullinan Street and The Parkhouse on the Gardens side. That spread suits couples and short-break visitors who want to walk to dinner, families who need family rooms and pools, and business travellers who want a fitness centre or a business centre within the grid.

Where to stay in City Bowl

Bo-Kaap

Bo-Kaap sits on the Signal Hill slope, and Rouge on Rose Boutique Hotel is on Rose Street here. The neighbourhood is a lived-in Cape Malay quarter, not a photo set. Start at the Bo-Kaap Museum on Wale Street, about R60 entry, then walk Chiappini and Rose Street for the painted facades, ask before shooting doorways, and buy koesisters or a samosa at Rose Corner Cafe on the corner of Rose and Longmarket.

Our picks here: Rouge on Rose Boutique Hotel

Gardens

Gardens is one of the residential shoulders of the bowl, and The Parkhouse on Kohling Street and More Quarters Hotel on Nicol Street both sit here. It puts you on the green edge of the centre: the old Dutch East India vegetable garden runs from Government Avenue behind St George's Cathedral to the South African Museum, free and shaded, with the National Gallery and the SA Museum at the far end.

Our picks here: The Parkhouse · More Quarters Hotel

Bree Street

Bree Street runs through the CBD grid and is the spine of the bowl's eating and drinking. Cape Heritage Hotel is at 90 Bree Street and Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town North Wharf at 1 Lower Bree Street. Long and Bree Street are the real centre, and Bree Street tables in high season should be booked three days ahead.

Our picks here: Cape Heritage Hotel · Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town North Wharf

Strand Street

Southern Sun Cape Sun sits on Strand Street in the CBD grid. The Castle of Good Hope is a six-minute walk east across Darling Street, R50, with the key ceremony and noon signal on weekdays, and the District Six Museum on Buitenkant Street, about R60, is the single most important hour in the city for understanding what forced removals meant.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

The City Bowl is the one part of Cape Town where you can genuinely live without a car for a week: the cableway, the museums, three markets and about two hundred restaurants sit within a thirty-minute walk of each other. The lower cableway station is on Tafelberg Road above Kloof Nek, first car at 8am, and the Platteklip Gorge hike starts 1.5 km east along the same road. The Castle of Good Hope is a six-minute walk east across Darling Street from the Strand Street hotels. After dark, stick to Bree, Kloof, Long and Loop where there are people and lights, and use an Uber for anything over four blocks rather than walking the Foreshore, upper Buitenkant or the station precinct.

When to go

Buy cableway tickets online and check the wind status page before you leave, because the south-easter closes the cableway for whole days. That wind is the City Bowl's summer signature, and it also makes the uphill walk to Vredehoek and upper Oranjezicht punishing in the heat. Full-moon nights bring hundreds of people with head torches up Signal Hill Road from the Kloof Nek turn-off, roughly 45 minutes to the top spiralling anticlockwise, with chains and staples near the summit. Go at dawn instead if you want it quiet.
