3-star hotels in Sea Point

A shortlist of 3-star hotels in Sea Point, the dense Atlantic-seaboard suburb of Cape Town with a three-kilometre promenade to Mouille Point. Built for travellers who want value, walkability and the everyday city rather than resort sand, and who are deciding between the addresses below.

Staying in Sea Point

Sea Point is a wall of apartment blocks two streets deep between Signal Hill and the Atlantic, with Main Road and Regent Road doing the shopping and eating, Beach Road doing the view, and a paved promenade running three kilometres from the Sea Point Pavilion to the Mouille Point lighthouse. It is Jewish, Congolese, Nigerian, Portuguese and old-Cape-white all at once, and at 6pm the promenade carries more of the real city than any other public space here. The catch is the water: this is the cold Atlantic side at 12 to 15 degrees, granite boulders and tidal pools rather than sand. Locals swim at the 1960s Sea Point Pavilion saltwater pool complex on Beach Road, and Regent Road stays busy until around 9pm, thinning out by midnight.

These addresses sit along the Sea Point shoreline and its side streets, with the rest just over the ridge towards Three Anchor Bay, Fresnaye and Tamboerskloof. It suits couples and families who want to walk to dinner from Bertram Road or Regent Road, short-break visitors who would rather swim in a tidal pool than lie on Clifton sand, and self-catering travellers who need a kitchen. Beach Road and Regent Road make the neighbourhood car-optional for most meals and the promenade.

Where to stay in Sea Point

Fresnaye

The ridge above Sea Point, quieter than Regent Road and closest to the Sea Point promenade at its northern end. Pineapple House Boutique Hotel on Irwinton Road is here, with an outdoor pool, garden and 24-hour reception, and the walk down to the promenade and to Regent Road dining is short.

Our picks here: Pineapple House Boutique Hotel

Three Anchor Bay

Just along the coast towards Mouille Point, where the promenade begins its run to the lighthouse. The Vagabond on Richmond Road offers breakfast, a garden and a terrace, a good base for early promenade walks and the putt-putt near Mouille Point.

Our picks here: The Vagabond

Tamboerskloof

On the city side of Signal Hill, above Sea Point and within reach of the city centre as well as the promenade. Chic Views on Kenmore Road has an outdoor pool, garden, terrace and wheelchair access, and suits guests who want to be between the beachfront and town.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

Sea Point is a wall of apartment blocks between Signal Hill and the Atlantic, with Main Road and Regent Road for shopping and eating and Beach Road for the view. The promenade runs three kilometres from the Sea Point Pavilion to the Mouille Point lighthouse; it is paved, car-free and closed to bicycles in the busy stretch, with public art, mini-golf near Mouille Point and Cafe Neo at the lighthouse end. Getting around the suburb is on foot: Regent Road is where the delis, restaurants and Mojo Market sit. This page lists no airport or station transfers, so plan arrivals separately.

When to go

Summer days are long here: in January the sun sets around 8.10pm, which stretches promenade walks and late Regent Road dinners. The Atlantic is coldest in the same months, 12 to 15 degrees, so locals swim in the Sea Point Pavilion saltwater pools on Beach Road rather than off the rocks. The sheltered coves at Milton, Rocklands and Saunders' Rocks work at high summer low tide on a still day. Book Regent Road restaurants from Thursday to Sunday in December and January.
