Getting there and around
By car it is about ten minutes: Main Road south, then Rhodes Drive past Newlands, with the gate on Rhodes Drive itself. There is no direct train, and buses require a change, so e-hailing at roughly R80 to R120 each way is the realistic alternative. Arrive before 09:00 on summer weekends or you will queue for the car park. Park at the Newlands Forest lot off the M3 Union Avenue, ten minutes south, and climb the shaded pine and stone-pine paths to the contour path. Ninety minutes gets you a full loop with views over the suburbs.
When to go
The suburb empties in the December to mid-February vacation, when guesthouse rates soften and you can park anywhere. Graduation weeks in December and April, plus the first fortnight of the academic year, are the exception: every B&B within walking distance of campus sells out to visiting parents months ahead. Spring brings the grassland flowers to the flat block of protected renosterveld bounded by Campground Road, Park Road and Klipfontein Road, and the Baxter stages a pantomime every December.
