Staying in Kalk Bay

Kalk Bay is a working fishing village on the False Bay coast about 35 minutes south of the city centre, squeezed onto a strip of land so narrow that the railway line, Main Road and the mountain all touch. Everything sits on 800 metres of one street: Kalk Bay Books at 124 Main Road, half a dozen antique dealers, the Olympia Café at 134 which opens at 7am and takes no bookings, and a harbour where boats still land snoek and yellowtail at dawn. Evenings are the best on this coast, with restaurant windows lit over black water and the Brass Bell built into the rocks beside the station platform.

These hotels sit along that same strip and the lanes climbing off it: Beach Rd, Main Rd, Echo Road, New Kings Main Road, Quarterdeck Rd, Clovelly Road, Camp Road, Sandhurst Road, Herschel Road and Gatesville Road, with a few further out at Fish Hoek, Muizenberg and Simons Town. Couples come for sea-facing windows and surf noise, families for the tidal pools and self-catering kitchens, and short-break visitors for a village where the car can stay parked. It suits anyone who wants the harbour rather than nightlife or a big sandy beach.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

Kalk Bay is about 35 minutes south of the city centre on the False Bay coast, and the train runs along the water's edge through the village. Main Road is a single lane each way and it is the only road, so on a January Sunday it becomes a stationary queue from Muizenberg to Fish Hoek; come by train or come before nine. Parking is the other problem, and on-street parking in the village is close to hopeless from mid-morning, which is why several properties here list a car park. Trains along the seawall start early.

When to go

December picks the village clean of accommodation, with twenty-odd places and no capacity to expand, so book well ahead if you want that month. January is the busiest for traffic and the warmest for swimming, with the tidal pool water sitting around 18 degrees in February. Winter brings the northwester that throws waves over the seawall onto Main Road. Come before nine in the morning in high season, and expect the village at its quietest outside December and January.
