About Durban
The population is diverse, with a strong Indian South African heritage that is visible in the food, markets and language of the city. Durban is also a major industrial and shipping centre; the harbour is one of the busiest in Africa. For visitors, the main draws are the beaches, the promenade, the cultural and historical sites in the city centre, and easy access to the surrounding hills and game reserves. The mix of urban energy and coastal leisure gives Durban a character distinct from other South African cities.
Where to stay in Durban
Golden Mile / Beachfront. The seafront strip along Marine Parade and the promenade is the most popular area for visitors, with many hotels facing the ocean and direct access to the beach.
uMhlanga. A coastal suburb north of the city centre, known for its beach, lagoon and a concentration of resorts and restaurants, including The Oyster Box.
Berea / Musgrave. A residential and commercial ridge just inland from the centre, offering hotels such as Coastlands Musgrave and easy access to the city without being on the beachfront.
Durban Central / South Beach. The historic core and the southern end of the beachfront, close to the harbour, the workshop area and venues like Garden Court Marine Parade and Garden Court South Beach.
Getting there and around
Durban is served by King Shaka International Airport, about 35 km north of the city centre, with frequent flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and other South African cities. The airport is connected by road; metered taxis, app-based ride services and hotel shuttles are the usual ways into town, and there is a bus link to the nearest rail station. Long-distance buses and trains also connect Durban with other major centres. Within the city, the beachfront and central areas are walkable, but for other neighbourhoods a car or ride-hailing is more practical. The local minibus taxi network is extensive but not aimed at visitors.
When to go
Durban has a humid subtropical climate with warm, wet summers from November to March and mild, drier winters from June to August. The beach season peaks in December and January, when the city is busiest. For milder weather and fewer crowds, the winter months are a good choice, though sea temperatures are cooler. Rain can occur at any time, but summer thunderstorms are common in the afternoons.
