Somerset West or Hout Bay? Choosing Your Cape Town Base

Somerset West or Hout Bay? Choosing Your Cape Town Base Somerset West or Hout Bay? Choosing Your Cape Town Base

Two very different Cape Town addresses, compared on drive times, wind, beaches and the kind of holiday each one actually delivers.

Two bases, two different holidays

Somerset West sits inland in the Helderberg basin, roughly 50 kilometres from the city centre and about 30 minutes by car from Cape Town International Airport along the N2. It is wine country: Vergelegen and Lourensford estates are minutes from the main road, and Stellenbosch is a 20-minute drive over the R44. The trade-off is that you are not on the coast. Gordons Bay and its harbour are about 15 minutes away, but the water is cold and the beaches are pebbly.

Hout Bay is a working harbour village on the Atlantic seaboard, 20 kilometres from the city centre. Chapman's Peak Drive starts at its southern edge, and Constantia's wine farms are 15 minutes over Constantia Nek. The beach is long and walkable, the water is bracing, and the valley funnels the south-easter so hard in summer that locals talk about wind as a season. You are in the mountains and the sea at once, and you are still inside the city.

Getting around, and what the wind does

Hout Bay has no train station, so you need a car or rely on ride-hailing, which is reliable in daytime but thin after midnight. The drive to the V&A Waterfront is 25 to 35 minutes; to Camps Bay, 20 minutes over the pass. In January the south-easter can blow for days, which rules out beach time but suits the sheltered Constantia winelands. Book a place with off-street parking and check whether the bedroom faces the valley.

Somerset West is car-dependent in a gentler way. The N2 and R44 move well outside commuter hours, but the morning run toward the city can add 20 minutes. You get more space for the money here, with gardens, self-catering cottages and quiet streets, and it makes an excellent base for a winelands-led trip. Trains from Somerset West station run to Cape Town, though the service is slow and not something I would build a holiday around.

Beaches, food and evenings

Hout Bay's beach is best at low tide and early morning; the harbour fish and chips are a local ritual, and the restaurants around the harbour and along Main Road cover everything from breakfast to late dinner. Chapman's Peak at sunrise is worth setting an alarm for. In summer the village fills up, so book a table rather than improvising on a Saturday. Expect guest houses and small hotels in the mid-range, with a handful of pricier places up the valley.

Somerset West is quieter after dark. Eating is split between the Somerset West mall strip, the older Main Road and the wine estates, several of which do long Sunday lunches. Gordons Bay adds a handful of seafood places on the water. For a family wanting space, a garden and easy day trips, this is the easier booking. For a couple who want sea air and a shorter run into the city, Hout Bay wins.

Which I would book, and when

If this is a first Cape Town trip with city sights on the list, including Table Mountain, the Waterfront and Kirstenbosch, I would book Hout Bay for three or four nights and accept the pass drives. If the trip is wine-led, or you have children and want room to breathe, I would book Somerset West and treat the city as a day out. Best months for Hout Bay are February to April, after the worst wind; Somerset West is good almost year-round, though August brings the wettest weather.

Skip a car-free plan in either place. Skip Hout Bay in a howling January if you picture long beach days, and skip Somerset West if you want to walk to dinner. One honest warning: the Hout Bay intersection at peak hour is genuinely slow, so time airport runs generously. Wherever you land, book early for December and Easter, when both areas fill with domestic travellers.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Cape Town, answered with this month’s numbers.

Can I stay in Hout Bay without a car?

Possible but limiting. Ride-hailing works well by day, and a few tours collect from the village. You will spend more and wait longer than drivers, especially after dark. A small rental car parked off-street is the practical choice.

Is Somerset West a good base for the Cape Winelands?

Yes, one of the best. Stellenbosch is roughly 20 minutes over the R44, and Vergelegen and Lourensford are close by. Franschhoek is about 45 minutes. It suits travellers who want to taste wine seriously and still reach the airport easily.

Which area is better for families?

Somerset West, usually. Bigger gardens, quieter streets, self-catering options and easy access to Gordons Bay and the winelands. Hout Bay is fine for older children but the wind and the harbour traffic make it less restful with very small ones.
