About Soweto
Soweto played a central role in South Africa's modern history. The 1976 student uprising began here, and today the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West marks those events. Vilakati Street, the former home of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is on the same road, drawing visitors from around the world. Away from the historic sites, the area has lively markets, churches, choirs, and a strong food and music culture.
For travellers, Soweto works both as a day trip from Johannesburg and as a base for several days. Hotels and guesthouses here range from full-service conference hotels to small bed and breakfasts, and the area is served by roads, buses and minibus taxis. Many visitors combine historical sites with an afternoon at a local restaurant or a walk through one of the older neighbourhoods.

Getting there and around
Soweto lies southwest of central Johannesburg, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic, and around an hour from OR Tambo International Airport. Most visitors arrive by road, either self-driving or on an organised tour; metered taxis and ride-hailing apps also serve the area. Minibus taxis are the main form of public transport for residents and connect Soweto with Johannesburg and other parts of Gauteng, though they can be busy and confusing for newcomers. Reckless driving and long walks after dark are best avoided. Distances between neighbourhoods are significant, so plan transport between sites rather than assuming you can walk everywhere.
When to go
Soweto has a mild, sunny climate for most of the year. Winters, from June to August, are dry with cool nights and warm days. Summers, from November to February, bring afternoon thunderstorms and higher temperatures. Spring and autumn are pleasant and often recommended for sightseeing. June 16 is Youth Day, which commemorates the 1976 uprising and brings events and crowds to the area. Weekdays are generally quieter at the main museums than weekends.
