About Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality

The area's economy has historically rested on agriculture, cattle and sunflower farming in particular, alongside mining and tourism. Madikwe is one of South Africa's larger game reserves and was developed as a conservation and ecotourism project on former farmland. Outside the reserve, the landscape is open bushveld and rolling grassland, with small settlements such as Lehurutshe, Groot Marico and Dinokana spread across the municipality.

For travellers, the municipality is primarily a safari and bushveld destination, with lodges concentrated inside and around Madikwe. Groot Marico, to the east, has its own literary and agricultural character and is known for its mampoer distilleries. Roads are generally good on the main N4 route, while reserve and rural roads may require a vehicle suited to gravel.

Where to stay in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality

Madikwe Game Reserve. The main reason most visitors come, with safari lodges spread across the reserve and direct access to guided game drives.

Zeerust. The municipal seat and largest town, useful for fuel, shops and services and as a base on the N4 corridor.

Groot Marico. A small town east of Zeerust known for its mampoer distilleries, literary associations and surrounding bushveld.

Getting there and around

By road, the municipality is reached via the N4 toll route from Pretoria and Rustenburg, passing through Zeerust and continuing towards the Botswana border at Skilpadshek. Driving from Johannesburg or Pretoria takes several hours. The nearest major airports are in Johannesburg and Pretoria; Gaborone in Botswana is also an option from the north. There is no scheduled passenger rail or commercial air service in the municipality. Getting around is easiest by car, as attractions are spread out and public transport is limited. Some reserve roads are gravel, so a vehicle with good clearance is helpful.

When to go

The dry winter months from May to September are generally considered the best time for wildlife viewing, as vegetation thins and animals gather around water. Days are mild to warm and nights can be cold. Summer, from October to April, brings heat, afternoon thunderstorms and greener bushveld, with good birdwatching. The reserve is malaria-free, but mosquito repellent is still sensible in the warmer, wetter months.
