About Potchefstroom
For visitors, Potchefstroom offers the pace of a country town with the amenities of a university city. Oak-lined streets, the Mooi River and its nature reserve, several museums and a growing café and restaurant scene make it a comfortable base for exploring the western parts of the North West and the Vaal River region. It is also a practical overnight stop for travellers driving between Johannesburg and towns such as Klerksdorp, Mahikeng or Kimberley.

Northern and western suburbs. Residential areas such as Baillie Park and Vander Hoff Park are close to schools, sports facilities and the main roads out of town, and generally suit travellers with their own transport.

Getting there and around
Potchefstroom sits just off the N12 between Johannesburg and Kimberley, roughly two hours' drive from central Johannesburg and OR Tambo International Airport, and about an hour from Klerksdorp. The city is not served by a passenger rail service, so most visitors arrive by car or long-distance bus or shuttle. Within Potchefstroom, taxis and private vehicles are the main ways to get around; the historic centre and university area are compact enough to walk, but many hotels and guesthouses lie in the suburbs, so having a car makes visiting the dam, nature reserve and surrounding countryside much easier.
When to go
Potchefstroom has a sunny highveld climate with warm, wet summers from October to March and cool, dry, frosty winters from May to August. Spring and autumn offer mild days and are pleasant for walking and river activities. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms, while winter nights are cold but days are usually clear. The city is liveliest when the university is in session, and quieter during the main mid-year and year-end academic holidays.
