What to Wear for a November Hike Above Cape Town

What to Wear for a November Hike Above Cape Town What to Wear for a November Hike Above Cape Town

Table Mountain can serve up four seasons before lunch in November, so the right layers matter more than the right boots.

Start with layers, not a single jacket

November sits at the tail end of the Cape's spring, with city temperatures typically in the mid-teens to mid-twenties Celsius and a strong south-easterly wind that locals call the Cape Doctor. On the mountain the numbers drop fast: Platteklip Gorge, the direct route up from Tafelberg Road, gains roughly 700 metres and is fully exposed to sun by mid-morning. The reliable formula is a moisture-wicking base layer, a light fleece or merino mid-layer, and a packable windproof shell. Skip the heavy insulated jacket; you will carry it more than wear it.

Footwear decides your day more than anything else. The routes above Cape Town are rocky, with loose scree on the upper sections of Lion's Head and slick, polished stone in Platteklip Gorge. Trail shoes with a decent lug are enough for Lion's Head and the Pipe Track, but boots with ankle support suit India Venster and the routes around Skeleton Gorge in Kirstenbosch. Wear them on the flight or pack them in hand luggage, and add blister plasters before you need them.

Sun, wind and the famous tablecloth

The south-easterly can arrive without warning and turn a calm morning on the front face into a wind tunnel. A cap with a cord, sunglasses with a dark lens and high-factor sunscreen are non-negotiable; UV at this latitude is fierce even under thin cloud. Carry a light buff or bandana for dust and wind, and a compact rain shell for the cloud that spills over the tabletop as the famous tablecloth. If the cloud base drops, the temperature on the summit can sit ten degrees below the City Bowl.

November is also peak wildflower season on the lower slopes. Expect to walk through restios and proteas rather than shade, so a long-sleeve lightweight shirt protects your arms from scratchy fynbos and sun at once. Light colours are kinder than black in the heat. A small daypack of 20 to 25 litres covers water, layers and lunch comfortably, and a dry bag keeps a phone and camera safe when the weather turns.

Timing, water and what to skip

Start early. The cableway from Tafelberg Road usually opens mid-morning and queues build on clear weekend days, while the first hour after sunrise is cooler and quieter on every route. Allow three to four hours for Platteklip Gorge up and the cableway down, and longer for Kasteelspoort or Skeleton Gorge. Carry at least two litres of water per person; there is no reliable drinking water on the mountain itself, and the streams above Kirstenbosch are not treated. The cableway does not run in high wind, so check the forecast before you commit to a one-way route.

What would I skip? Jeans, which stay cold when damp, and cotton T-shirts, which do the same. Skip the open-toed sandals on any summit route, however many locals you see wearing them on the Pipe Track. Leave the drone and the bluetooth speaker at the hotel. If you have only one hiking day and the forecast is marginal, choose Lion's Head over Table Mountain: the chain sections are short, the loop is roughly two hours and the views over Camps Bay and the Atlantic Seaboard still deliver.

Where to stay to make the most of it

Your base shapes your morning. Hotels in the City Bowl and along Bree Street put you ten to fifteen minutes by car from the lower cableway station, and the early light on Devil's Peak is worth the alarm. The V&A Waterfront is convenient for ferries and restaurants but adds fifteen to twenty minutes of driving to most trailheads. Camps Bay and the Atlantic Seaboard bring sea views and quicker access to the Lion's Head track, at the cost of wind exposure and busier parking in November.

Book two to three weeks ahead for November, which is busy but not yet December-peak, and ask your hotel to hold luggage after checkout so you can hike on your final morning. A hotel with a laundry service is genuinely useful after a dusty day on the mountain. Wherever you settle, set aside one flexible morning for the hike and treat the rest of the forecast as a bonus.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Cape Town, answered with this month’s numbers.

Do I need hiking boots for Table Mountain in November?

Trail shoes are fine for Lion's Head and the lower contour paths. For Platteklip Gorge, India Venster or Skeleton Gorge, choose boots with ankle support and grip, as the rock is uneven and often loose underfoot.

What is the weather like on the mountain in November?

Expect mild city temperatures and a strong south-easterly wind, with far cooler conditions on the summit and fast-moving cloud. Mornings are usually clearer, so start early and carry a windproof shell and warm mid-layer.

How much water should I carry on a Cape Town hike?

At least two litres per person for any summit route, more on hot, windless days. There is no reliable drinking water on the mountain, and streams above Kirstenbosch are not treated, so fill up at your hotel before leaving.
