About Mbombela
Mbombela is not a typical tourist city in itself; most visitors use it as a base before or after a safari. The city offers a mix of business hotels, country estates and self-catering lodges, and many accommodations are located in quiet suburban areas or along the road to the park. The Riverside Mall and the nearby botanical garden are among the local landmarks.
Because of its position on the N4 highway, Mbombela is easily reached from Gauteng and Mozambique. Whether you are breaking a longer journey or starting a wildlife trip, the city provides practical services and a range of places to stay.

Getting there and around
Mbombela is on the N4 highway, about 330 kilometres east of Pretoria and 100 kilometres west of the Mozambique border. Kruger Mpombela International Airport, located about 25 kilometres northeast of the city, has flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Intercape and other bus lines connect Mbombela with Johannesburg and Maputo. By car, the N4 is a toll road; the drive from Johannesburg takes around four hours. Once in the city, a car is useful for reaching nearby attractions, though taxis and ride-hailing services operate in town.
When to go
The dry winter months from May to September are generally considered the best time to visit for wildlife viewing, as vegetation is thinner and animals gather at water sources. Days are mild and nights can be cool. Summer, from October to March, is hot and rainy, with afternoon thunderstorms. The city hosts the annual Innibos arts festival in June or July.
