About Arniston

The area's most famous natural feature is Waenhuiskrans Cave, a large sea cave that can be explored at low tide. Arniston's coast is also marked by the wreck of the British transport ship Arniston, which sank in 1815 with heavy loss of life; the village takes its name from that ship. Fishing remains part of local life, and the Kassiesbaai community is recognised for its cultural heritage.

Visitors come for quiet beaches, coastal walks, and a slower pace. The climate is mild, with warm summers and cooler, windier winters. The surrounding Overberg region offers opportunities for whale watching in season, particularly around De Hoop and Hermanus. Arniston is a place to unwind, explore tidal pools, and experience a traditional Cape fishing village.

Where to stay in Arniston

Kassiesbaai. This historic fishing community offers a chance to stay among traditional whitewashed cottages, though accommodation here is limited and often booked well in advance.

Along the coast towards Waenhuiskrans. Properties in this direction are closer to the cave and the rugged coastline, with some offering sea views and direct access to walking trails.

Getting there and around

Arniston is about a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive from Cape Town, via the N2 and then the R316 through Bredasdorp. There is no train or scheduled bus service directly to Arniston, so a car is the most practical way to arrive. The nearest town with fuel and supplies is Bredasdorp, about 30 kilometres away. Once in Arniston, the village is small and walkable, but having a car makes it easier to explore the surrounding Overberg, including Waenhuiskrans Cave and nearby nature reserves. Taxis are not readily available, so plan your transport in advance.

When to go

The best time to visit Arniston is during the summer months from November to March, when the weather is warm and sunny, ideal for beach activities and exploring the coast. Spring (September to October) and autumn (April to May) also offer pleasant conditions with fewer visitors. Winters (June to August) can be cool and windy, with occasional rain, but this is also the prime season for whale watching along the Overberg coast, particularly around Hermanus and De Hoop.
