Greenmarket Square is a cobbled 1690s square in the middle of the City Bowl, bounded by Burg, Longmarket and Shortmarket Streets. It has served as a slave market, a vegetable market, a parade ground, a car park and a protest site, and today it is an open-air craft market on weekdays. Around the cobbles stand the Old Town House of 1755, which holds the Michaelis Collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings, and a run of early twentieth-century commercial facades including some of the city's best Art Deco. Two hundred-odd traders set up canopies selling wooden carvings, masks, beadwork, printed fabric, soapstone, wire art, drums, jewellery and clothing. It is one of the oldest public spaces in South Africa, and the square itself is small — crossable in ninety seconds — so most visits run forty-five minutes, or an hour and a half if you are buying seriously and also going into the Michaelis Collection.
